How to Play King of My Heart (Piano Tutorial!)

Sep 20, 2018

Chances are you’ve heard the song, King of My Heart, and chances are you LOVED it!! Like all of us around Rooted :)

We loved that song so much, we wanted to create a piano tutorial to share with you. The song has a very cool Piano lead line played with the Right Hand over the chords in the Left Hand, that is simple, but very fun to play!

SO… We had one of our friends Todd Locke (keys player for grammy award winning artist Lauren Daigle) create a worship song tutorial on this song with some incredible explanation behind the song as well.

Even if you’re not sure you can do it, GO FOR IT!! And then let us know what you thought. I believe you’re going to not only learn how to play the song, but you’re going to learn something really helpful about playing worship music in general, that you probably never knew before!

Go ahead and click the link and get started learning King of My Heart today!

How to Overcome Stage Fright

Sep 13, 2018

I’m really excited about the blog today and the power behind the info!

If you’ve ever performed on a stage or hope to one day, then today’s blog is for YOU!

Performing in front of people, no matter how small or large the crowd, can be a very scary thing! In fact, I would say that they smaller the crowd, the more it requires of you to really perform well and engage the audience well.

Even after the hundreds, possibly thousands of shows I’ve played throughout my career so far, I still have a little bit of nervousness before heading out to play. I want my contribution to the set to be solid and impactful and leave people glad that they decided to come!

Whether you’re worried about being able to play the songs correctly, remember all the chords in the songs, or just scared you MIGHT make a mistake, nerves play a role in just about every performance for everyone.

Today, one of our coaches, Carly Burruss is going to give you some incredible insight into how to overcome the stagefright...

How to read a chord chart

Aug 09, 2018

There are many questions that I receive week to week, but one that I hear the most is, “How do I know what to play based on the chord chart?”

I’ve heard this from many of you as well, which is why I’m excited to shed some light on this today!

Maybe you’ve been asked to play for your church, a band or simply with some friends, and they’ve given you a chord chart. This chord chart, which is a layout of the song either has letters (like Am) or numbers (referring to the Nashville Number System) and possibly the song lyrics.

You have the chords, you have the song’s structure, but nothing about the rhythms where you play certain chords, or with what inversion. Where do you get this info from? How can you know how to take the info from this page and translate it into a well played song?

This is exactly what we’re going to talk about today, so let’s jump in!

You've never practiced like this before...

Jul 26, 2018

“Practice” probably isn’t what you hoped we’d be talking about today. I don’t know think I know anyone that just absolutely loves practicing.

Whether it’s practice for a sport in the days leading up to a game, a rehearsal prior to an event, or even just your daily practice at home as you work to improve, “practice” is not the reason you get out of bed in the morning.

I think one of the biggest reasons we don’t like practice is because we’re a little scared of it…

Fearing the time commitment it might require, fearing we might not know what to practice, or even fearing failure even after hours spent in practice.

Today, one of our coaches, Jonathan Maiocco, is going to help remove some of those fears and give you confidence heading into your next practice time!

Check out the video and let us know what you think.

Best,

Chris

What comes first: Music or Lyrics?

Jul 18, 2018

Have you ever wondered what SHOULD come first when writing a song?

Wondered if you should have a melody and chords all laid out prior to starting the lyrics…

Or if lyrics should be the bedrock and then form the melody and chords around the lyrics?

Well, today we have the pleasure of hearing from one of our coaches here at Rooted on this topic… Jonathan Maiocco!

Jonathan is one of our piano and songwriting coaches here at RMC and has some great insight into how to avoid getting stumped with this question before you even start writing.

So, take a few minutes and check out the video below. Take it in, let us know what you think and see if this process can help you get started writing today!
